Rigoletto
In cinemas July 2011

Elijah Moshinsky's production of Verdi's Rigoletto is one of Opera Australia's best-loved productions, taking its inspiration from Federico Fellini's all-time classic La Dolce Vita.

One of Britain's most distinguished baritones Alan Opie takes the title role, bringing his celebrated interpretation of Rigoletto to the Sydney Opera House for the first time. He is joined by Emma Matthews as Gilda and Operatunity Oz winner David Parkin as deadly assassin Sparafucile.

Synopsis

Rigoletto is in the pay of the Duke of Mantua. His job is to keep his master laughing, and to deflect attention from the Duke's many peccadillos. When the Duke's eye locks onto a touchingly innocent young maid, Rigoletto turns from spiteful joker into desperate father. Verdi paints the characters transformations with a cascade of brilliant arias and ensembles, from the heartbreaking 'Pari siamo!' to the wickedly jaunty 'La donna è mobile'.
