Independent cinema gems around the UK

Here at CinemaLive we booked our content with a wide variety of independent exhibitors in various different locations. We have cinemas, schools, theatres and even churches taking part across the year, screening our content to their loyal customers. Here we take a look at some independents who have something special!

1. Rex Berkhamsted

Famed for its beautiful art deco theatre, the Rex plays a full and very varied programme of films from around the world. People dress up to sit at the round, cabaret-style tables, a truly unique way to view films.

2. The Electric, Birmingham

Claimed to be the oldest cinema in the UK, this gem opened in 1909. Showing a wide variety of indie, mainstream and world cinema, it even offers itself up as a unique wedding venue. A cultural hub in the middle of Birmingham - there's even a film called The Last Projectionist, which is a charming story centred around this picture house.

3. Zeffirellis, Ambleside

As the Lake District's premier independent cinema, this place is also a jazz café and an award-winning restaurant. With careful consideration of programming, they refuse to screen any films considered to have gratuitous violence. It’s a cinema with style.

4. Prince Charles, London

An icon in the West End, the Prince Charles cinema does not take itself too seriously. Screening cult classic like Lord of the Ring marathons, this is also the home of the most famous terrible movie, The Room. They will even let you throw spoons at the screen during optimal moments!

5. The Rex, Elland

Situated on a genuine Coronation Street, this is one of the oldest structurally unaltered cinemas in the country. Boasting a loyal following, a highlight of this cinema is the regular addition of organ concerts to its programme. Tickets are very reasonable, with added free tea and biscuits – you can't get more British than that!

6. Light House, Wolverhampton

This is an independent charity that sets out to increase the enjoyment and understanding of film, creative media, photography and video to the wider audience in Wolverhampton. With a loyal following, the cinema shows a diverse range of mainstream and independent programmes, and will also screen V for Vendetta on Fireworks night. Our very own Take That concert was a big hit there - especially with a glass of prosecco included!

7. Picture House Uckfield

Opening in 1916, the Picture House recently celebrated its centenary in style. Run by film expert Kevin Markwick, this is a family owned business that is beloved by all. This cinema evokes passion and loyalty amongst its fan and patrons and we enjoy working closely with the team there. They hosted a fabulous birthday party for Cliff Richard before our Live screening in October 2018 – with balloons, badges and fizz galore!
